1. Error Message: "Scanner is not connected. Please check the Cable," or there is a large red "X" on the scanner icon in the system tray at the bottom left of the screen.

Error Message: "TWAIN error. [T009] Error in getting the first TWAIN data source. [T021] Unable to find the TWAIN Source manager (TWAIN_32.DLL). Please copy the TWAIN_32.DLL file from your source disk to your Windows Folder. [T039]"

Cause: This error message occurs if the driver is unable to communicate with the scanner, or if the scanner is not powered on.

Solution: It is very important that you make sure that the connections are right, that the scanner is getting power, and that the parallel port is set to the proper mode for the scanner.

  1. Disconnect any printers or other parallel port devices from the scanner and connect the scanner directly to the parallel port by itself. This will determine if the error is coming from the scanner, or from a conflict with another device.
  2. Make sure the power adapter is plugged in and the outlet works. The AC adapter will be warm if it is plugged into a good outlet.
  3. Check the cable connections in the back of the scanner and the computer to make certain they are tight. Verify that you are using the IEEE 1284 cable that came with the scanner and that it is connected from the port labeled "Computer" on the rear of the scanner to your computer's parallel port.
  4. Set the parallel port mode to EPP in the computer's BIOS. This solves many problems with parallel port scanners. For more information on the EPP mode, click here.
  5. It is possible to have a "Scanner not Connected" message caused by a software conflict. Try operating the scanner in Safe Mode in a program like iPhoto Plus 1.2. If the scanner operates in Safe Mode, you are most likely experiencing a conflict with a software program loading in Windows. For information on booting into Safe Mode (Windows 95/98 only) click here.
  6. If the computer does not have an EPP mode (some old 486s don't), we suggest that you do one of the following:
  1. (Easy) Exchange the 1200 ED for a 1200 LS, which attaches to a 16-bit ISA SCSI card that comes with the scanner, or a 600 USB which uses a Universal Serial Bus connector.
  2. (Difficult -- Only for users familiar with IRQ/DMA Issues) Purchase an enhanced parallel port interface card such as the SIIG Parallel Pro Enhanced Parallel Port.
Note: If you choose to buy a second parallel port and experience difficulty installing it, you must contact the manufacturer of the card if you need help with installation or configuration.

2. Version conflict: The message "A file being copied is older than the file currently on your system. It is recommended that you keep your existing file," appears with the filename: C6E10USD.DLL.

Cause: Your system has had a more recent version of this DLL file previously installed.

Solution: Click YES when the version conflict window appears to keep the more recent file.

3. Problem: During the installation of TextBridge, the screen appears to freeze and nothing happens for a few moments.

Cause: The TextBridge program performs several system checks during the installation. Depending on the system, this may take a few moments.

Solution: Allow TextBridge to complete the system checks and it will present the next screen to continue installation.

4. Problem: Unable to reinstall the application from the installation CD (Windows 98).

Cause: The scanner's applet has already been placed in the Device Manager. This entry and the other scanner software needs to be completely removed before it can be reinstalled.

Solution: The scanner software must be uninstalled and the scanner removed from the Device Manager before it can be reinstalled (Windows 98). Follow the steps below:

  1. Click on Start and choose Settings.
  2. Click on Control Panel.
  3. Double-click on the Scanners and Cameras control panel icon.
  4. Highlight the Mustek 1200 ED entry by clicking on it.
  5. Click on the Remove button and then click OK.
  6. Double-click the icon for Add/Remove Programs.
  7. Scroll through the list of programs to the Mustek 1200 ED. Click on the listing once to highlight it and then click the Add/Remove button.
  8. Follow the onscreen instructions for the uninstall program including restarting the computer. Once the system reboots, reinstall the CD-ROM.

5. Problem: Images scanned with the Direct Scan program are too dark.

Cause: The defaulted gamma setting within the driver is 1.4, which can be too dark for some images.

Solution: Since the Direct Scan program does not provide for changes in the driver settings, the TWAIN interface will need to be acquired in an imaging program such as Photo Express 2.0 SE. The gamma can be adjusted to 1.8 for better results. Follow these steps:

  1. Start the Ulead Photo Express 2.0 SE program.
  2. Click on the Scan icon. The scan options will appear on the right-hand side of the screen.
  3. Click on the box for "Show TWAIN data source" and then click the Acquire button.
  4. The scanner's TWAIN interface will now open. Click on the tab marked Enhance.
  5. In the Enhance window, locate the slider bar labeled Gamma. Slide the bar until the value reads 1.8. Click on the Main tab to return to the main TWAIN interface screen.
  6. Click on the TWAIN interface Exit button and then close Photo Express. You may now open the Direct Scan program and try your scan again.

6. Error message: "This image data can only be saved in TIFF format."

Cause: 48-bit scans can only be saved in the TIF file format and cannot be saved in JPG or GIF format.

Solution: Since 48-bit images can only be saved in the TIF format, Photo Express will automatically save them as TIFs regardless of which type is selected.

7. Error message: While scanning into iPhoto Plus 1.2 or 4.0, an error message appears "Unknown pixel type, only B&W, Grayscale, PALETTE, and RGB supplied."

Cause: The application you are using does not support 48-bit scanning.

Solution: Change the Scan Mode in the TWAIN dialog window through the host application to 24-bit. If you wish to scan in 48-bit mode, open the TWAIN interface in an application that can support 48-bit, such as Photo Express 2.0 SE.

8. Error message: "The AP does not support 48-bit color images."

Cause: The 48-bit driver was chosen in the TWAIN interface while using an application that does not support 48-bit images.

Solution: Not all applications support 48-bit scanning. Make sure to set the Scan Mode to 24-bit Color, Gray or LineArt in applications that do not support 48-bit scanning. To scan in 48-bit mode, use Photo Express 2.0 SE that came with the 1200 ED.

9. Problem: Where are images saved after the scanner is done scanning with Photo Express 2.0 SE?

Cause: Photo Express 2.0 SE has a default directory folder where it saves images into the album.

Solution: Before pressing the Acquire command in Photo Express, make sure you have named your file. The default name is "Pict." The album files are stored in C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems\Ulead Photo Express2 SE\PhotoAbm and can be found by using the Windows Find File function.

  1. Click on Start and select Find. Choose Files or Folders.
  2. In the Find window, choose the C:\ drive under the heading Look In and make sure the box is checked for Include All Subfolders.
  3. Type the filename of the picture in the Named line and click Find Now. The filename will appear in a Window below showing where it is stored on the hard drive.

10. Problem: Many of the features in the TWAIN interface are grayed out and cannot be used.

Cause: Due to the complexity of 48-bit scanning, many post-processing features like filters are not available in the TWAIN interface.

Solution: After scanning the image in 48-bit mode, use the application program to manipulate or alter the image.

11. Problem: The printer is not responding and returning error messages such as "There was an error writing to LPT1" or "There was a problem printing to the printer due to an unknown error."

Cause: There has been a loss in communication between the printer and the system.

Solution: Since the printer is connected to the system via the scanner, you will want to make sure the scanner is correctly connected and getting power. Also, make sure the scanner is connected from the port labeled COMPUTER to the LPT port on the computer and that the printer is plugged into the port labeled PRINTER.

  1. What is the length of your printer cable? The longer your cable is the more likely it is that the signal is getting weak before it reaches the printer. Try to have the shortest length of cable possible. Measure the distance from your scanner to your printer will be located. Use a cable that is as close possible to that length.
  2. Make sure that your printer cable is hooked up correctly and is a high quality cable. It has the IEEE 1284 rating printed on the side of the cable.
  3. Count the pins coming from the ends of the printer cable. Make sure you have 25 pins. If you have any less your cable may be incompatible or sub-standard.

12. What is the difference between 24-bit and 48-bit images? How can 48-bit images be scanned?

24-bit images, also known as True Color images, are capable of displaying up to 16.7 million shades and tones. True Color has long been the highest color setting used by the majority of monitors, video cards and the Windows operating system.

Because of the 24-bit limit, 30 and 36-bit scanners capable of recognizing shades and tones beyond the standard 16.7 million used an "internal/external" system to process images. In a 36-bit scanner, the scanner captures almost a billion shades and tones from the image. The scanner then selects the best possible 24-bit image from the abundant range of colors, and this is transmitted from the scanner to the computer.

Mustek's 48-bit scanners use a technology known as BDIT or Bit Depth Increased Technology. This patented technology uses a complex mathematical system to examine the pixels surrounding each pixel in an image. These calculations increase the number of shades and tones to almost 281 trillion increasing the detail throughout the image.

Instead of selecting the best 24-bit image from 48-bit, the 1200 ED transmits the entire 48-bit enhanced image to the computer. Because of the 24-bit plateau, only certain applications, such as Photo Express 2.0 SE, can be used to scan 48-bit images.
